Grandmother’s Weird Christmas Tree
It was a weird Christmas tree. At least, through the eyes of a twelve year-old boy, it was disconcerting. The tree was spindly and bare looking – lacking the lush fullness of the usual fresh-cut tree that the young and old would, so eagerly, gather around each year. Yes, it was decorated and lighted, but without the richness of Christmas trees past. The memory-stirring scent of the boughs was not present. There was, however, quite a stir created by Grandmother Landers’ weird Christmas tree.

It all started when Grandmother decided to decorate a dried century plant in place of the traditional Christmas tree. Grandmother, an award winning Freeport Garden Club member, envisioned the woody stalk with its pod holding branches into a uniquely different Christmas tree. So different was it that the local newpaper, The Brazosport Facts, ran a picture of the tree and Grandmother during the holiday season. The garden club raved. Whole families drove by to catch a glimpse. Christmas at Grandmother’s house was abuzz about the tree. Of course, a cetain young boy thought the century plant Christmas tree was really weird.
Now with the years and Grandmother gone, I fondly remember Grandmother’s special Christmas tree. What I saw then as weird, I realize now was the results of loving and creative hands. An over-looked castoff shaped into a thing of unique beauty. Yes, there was richness there all the time in Grandmother’s weird Christmas tree.

The virgin birth, the crib in the manger, the angel’s message to the shepherds, the gifts of the Magi and the baby Jesus are all weird to much of the world. But, through this weirdness, God enriched mankind through His Son – the Prince of Peace, the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords. At this Christmas- time, may each one realize the truth of the Christmas message. And, thank God for Grandmother’s weird Christmas tree.
